SIG Membership Application

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty or interest area. The Clinical Nurse Specialist SIG was established in 1989.

Clinical Nurse Specialist SIG Mission Statement

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) SIG exists to support the role of the clinical nurse specialist in the advanced practice of oncology nursing. The CNS SIG supports the ONS mission statement and promotes advanced practice by:

  • Developing, promoting and documenting the clinical nurse specialist role;
  • Providing the means to promote the study and exchange of information, experiences and ideas regarding clinical nurse specialist practice;
  • Nurturing the novice and experienced individual in the clinical nurse specialist role;
  • Supporting the ANA/ONS definition of clinical nurse specialist.

Goals

  • Facilitate educational activities.
  • Promote CNS involvement in health policy changes.
  • Strengthen collaboration with internal/external groups involved in the promotion of advanced practice nursing.
  • Implement research activities to develop knowledge base in OCNS role.
  • Promote the exchange and use of new knowledge in practice.
  • Enhance the image and recognition of the Oncology CNS in diverse roles and practice settings.
  • Explore strategies to mentor leadership development by mentoring the novice Oncology CNS.
  • Foster retention and involvement of members.

Activities

The CNS SIG is active in submitting topics for roundtables, instructional and discussion sessions, and poster presentations at ONS educational events. Work groups have been exploring: ways to communicate and document the difference an Oncology CNS can make; and, the implementation of a regional mentorship program for matching novice and experienced CNSs. Available through ONS is a patient education brochure developed by the SIG to describe the Oncology CNS role. The SIG continues to work collaboratively with the Nurse Practitioner SIG and ONS on projects involving advanced practice.

Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once each year during the ONS Annual Congress. CNS SIG leaders maintain ongoing communication with SIG members through written communiques and the SIG newsletter, Visions. The newsletter is resourceful in featuring a message from the SIG leadership, timely articles on advanced practice issues, reports on SIG activities, and diverse experiences of SIG members in developing their CNS roles. The SIG offers members many opportunities for involvement.

Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
